God's Word

John 7:40a, 41a

Some in the crowd who heard these words said, “This is the Messiah.”

God's Word Today

The word Messiah means the “anointed one” or the king who will put an end to sin and war and will bring peace on earth. When Jesus was on earth, some people believed Him when He said He was the Messiah. Others did not. Today, when people hear about Jesus, some believe He is the Messiah and some do not. Do you believe Jesus is the Messiah?

To Do Today

Today, think of all the people you know who believe in Jesus and thank God that you know them.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Romans 8:11

If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.

God's Word Today

Jesus died on the cross so that we could be saved. Jesus overcame death and rose again. That is what we celebrate at Easter. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will raise you from the dead when it is time. This is a promise Jesus made to you.

To Do Today

Today, thank Jesus for dying on the cross for you. Thank God's Spirit for bringing Him back to life. Thank God's Spirit for the promise to bring you back to life. Talk about this with your family.

God's Word

John 8:7

But when they asked Jesus He straightened and said to them,

“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

God's Word Today

The Pharisees came running to Jesus to tell Him that a woman had been bad. They were what we call “tattle tales”. They wanted to get the woman in trouble. They wanted to see her punished. But Jesus knew what was in their hearts, and He told them not to be a “tattle tale” unless they were perfect themselves. In other words, they shouldn’t judge others. We should be careful not to be like the Pharisees. We shouldn’t tell on brothers or sisters or schoolmates or friends just because we want to see them get into trouble. That makes us just as sinful. It does not make Jesus happy

To Do Today

Today, thank Jesus for knowing the truth about you.

God's Word

Numbers 21:9

Moses made a bronze serpent and mounted it on a pole, and whenever anyone who had been bitten by a serpent looked at the bronze serpent, he recovered.

God's Word Today

In Moses’ time, the people were angry at God and complaining because things weren’t going their way. God punished them with snakes. The people cried out and God, who loved them so much, forgave them and gave them the pole with the serpent on it. The people would look at the pole and be healed. Today, many believe this pole helped people to believe in Jesus on the cross as a symbol of forgiveness and healing. Doctors use the symbol of the snake on the pole because it represents healing. Next time you go to the doctor, look for the symbol.

To Do Today

Today, thank God for doctors, nurses, and all in the medical profession. Draw a picture of the snake on a pole and draw a picture of Jesus on the cross.

God's Word

John 8:31-32

Jesus then said to the Jews who believed in him,

“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

God's Word Today

When Jesus talks about “remaining in His word”, He means if you read the Bible every day and think about what it says, you will know the truth. God speaks truth so it is wise to listen to Him. Jesus also says that knowing the truth will set you free. You will not be a slave to sin. In other words, Jesus will help you to be free of sin.

To Do Today

Today, thank God for the Bible and read one of your favorite verses.

God's Word

John 8:57-59

So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them,

"Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."

So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

God's Word Today

Jesus told the people that he was I AM. I AM is another name for God. He was telling them that He was God. The people didn't believe Him. They thought He was insulting God so they threw stones at Him. Would you want to protect God? Do you think God understood why the people were throwing stones at His Son?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus. How many names do you know for Jesus. Write down as many as you can. Ask your parents to help you.

God's Word

Psalm 18:7

In my distress I called out: Lord! I cried out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry to him reached his ears.

God's Word Today

When you are in trouble or in pain, who do you call out to? Do you call for your mom or your dad? Maybe you call for your grandma. For thousands of years, people have been calling out to God. He heard the person who wrote this psalm and He hears you now. God promises to hear our cry.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the people you can call in an emergency. Write down their phone numbers. Also thank God for always being there for you.

God's Word

Ezekiel 37:23b

I will deliver them from all their sins, and cleanse them so that they may be my people and I may be their God.

God's Word Today

God made this promise to the nation of Israel thousands of years ago. He makes the same promise to you today. Because you are human, you cannot live without sin. God sent you Jesus who cleanses you when you are baptized. Because Jesus does that, you can be His child and He can be your God.

To Do Today

Today, sing an Easter song.

Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion

God's Word

Matthew 21:8-9

The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.

God's Word Today

Jesus is coming into Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover feast. He is riding on a donkey and people are putting palm leaves down on the road so it won’t be dusty. They are happy to see Jesus and praise him. If Jesus were coming to your house for dinner, what would you do? Would you clean your house? What would you fix special to eat?

To Do Today

Today, decide what you would do to prepare for a visit from Jesus.

God's Word

John 12:3

Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil made from genuine aromatic nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.

God's Word Today

When Jesus was on earth, most people wore sandals. It was the custom to wash your feet before sitting at the table for a meal. A friend of Jesus named Mary knew Jesus was special, so she washed his feet with expensive oil when He came to her house for dinner.

To Do Today

Today, when you wash your feet, put some nice lotion on them. You are special too.

Isaiah 49: 6b

I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

God's Word Today

When God tells of a light, He is talking about Jesus. God told Isaiah about Jesus hundreds of years before Jesus came. God promised that his salvation would reach the ends of the earth. God wants every single person on the whole planet to know about Jesus. Today you can learn about Jesus on the radio and on the television. Soon the whole planet will know about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, help God tell the world about Jesus. Email or write a letter to a friend who lives far away and tell them about Jesus.

Matthew 26: 14-15

Then one of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver.

God's Word Today

One of Jesus disciples turned against Him. Judas Iscariot sold information about where Jesus was for thirty pieces of silver. He betrayed Jesus. Would you use your money to betray Jesus, or would you use it to help Him?

To Do Today

Today, count out the money you have. Thank God for all you have and give some of it to the poor.

John 13:14-15

“If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.”

God's Word Today

It was the custom in Jesus’ time to wash your feet before sitting down for a meal. They did this because they took their sandals off before sitting at the table and their feet were very dirty. Would you want stinky feet at your meal table? Because Jesus loved the disciples, he washed their feet for them. This was an act to show them that he would do anything for them because he loved them so much. In some churches today, people wash each other’s feet on the Thursday before Easter. They do this as an act of kindness and love for Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, wash someone’s feet and tell that person that Jesus loves them.

The Passion of Jesus

God's Word

John 18:12
John 19:1-3
John 19:17-18

So the band of soldiers, the tribune, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head and clothed him in a purple cloak, and they came to him and said, “Hail, King of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly.

So they took Jesus and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side with Jesus in the middle.

God's Word Today

The priests and officials were afraid of truth and, because Jesus is truth, they were afraid of Him. They beat Him and put a crown of thorns on his head. People do mean things when they are afraid. They were so afraid, they killed Jesus. They crucified Him on the cross. Jesus let them do these things because He wanted to sacrifice His life and die to save us.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus on the cross and thank Him for dying for you. Read with your family the whole story of the Passion in John18:1 to John 19:42.

Easter Vigil

God's Word

Roman 6:4b

So just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.

God's Word Today

Christ died and was raised from the dead. He did this so that you could do the same thing. You will also have a new life.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of heaven and draw Jesus there. Is He smiling?

Easter Sunday

Resurrection of the Lord

God's Word

Acts 10:39-43

“We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

God's Word Today

Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, is testifying or telling you that Jesus was the chosen one, the Son of God, sent to save us. He rose from the dead in a victory over death, a victory He shares with you. This is a time to rejoice and celebrate. It is a wonderful blessing because it means that someday, if we believe in and follow the way of Jesus, we can be in heaven with God. Many people celebrate this special day of Easter. Many families get together to have parties. Others go to church together. Some families enjoy a quiet day in the park. How does your family celebrate this special day?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of your family celebrating Easter. Sing an Easter song to Jesus.

God's Word

Matthew 28:8-10

Then the women went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them,

“Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

God's Word Today

When the angel told the women that Jesus was alive, they were so excited. They ran to tell the disciples. The disciples were so happy that they kissed Jesus feet. They loved Him so much and were so afraid that they would never see Him again. Do you remember seeing someone that you love that you hadn’t seen in a long time? Maybe it was an aunt or an uncle. Maybe it was a grandma or grandpa. Do you remember how excited you were to see them? This is how Jesus’ disciples felt.

To Do Today

Today, plan what you would do if Jesus were coming to visit you.

God's Word

John 20:11 and 16

Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been.
Jesus said to her,

“Mary!”

She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher.

God's Word Today

The other women ran to tell the disciples. But Mary Magdalene was so sad, that she stayed at the tomb crying. Then she saw the angels and then Jesus spoke to her. Can you imagine how surprised and happy she must have been? What do you think the angels who spoke to Mary looked like? What would you do if you saw an angel?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the angels that Mary saw.

God's Word

Luke 24:29-31

“Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.

God's Word Today

The disciples met Jesus on the way from the empty tomb. They didn’t recognize him until He ate bread with them. Then they realized who He was. It was a miracle. They were surprised and overjoyed to see Jesus again. When a miracle happens, we sometimes don’t recognize that it is one. Miracles happen around us every day. It is a miracle when a flower blooms. It is a miracle when the rain waters the forest. It is a miracle when someone you love gives you a hug. Can you think of any miracles that you have seen?

To Do Today

Today, write down a list of all the miracles you see around you.

Easter Thursday

God's Word

Luke 24:36-39

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them,

“Peace be with you.”

But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. The he said to them,

“Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

God's Word Today

The disciples had seen Jesus die on the cross. Now all of a sudden He is with them. They thought He was a spirit or a ghost. He told them to touch His hands and feet and see that he was flesh and bones. He was real. This was very difficult for the disciples to understand. It is even more difficult for us to understand. The disciples were able to touch Jesus and see that He was real. We cannot do that. We have to trust that what the disciples told us is true. We have to trust and go by faith that what is said in the Bible about Jesus is truth.

To Do Today

Today, thank God for the Bible. Say a prayer to Jesus.

Easter Friday
April 21, 2017

God's Word

John 21:12-14

Jesus said to them,

"Come, have breakfast.”

And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you? because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

God's Word Today

Jesus came this time to eat with the disciples. He ate fish, which showed them He was real. A ghost or spirit cannot eat real food. The disciples now understood that Jesus was indeed alive. Today we use the fish as a symbol of Jesus. He fed His disciples fish. He feeds us truth in His word.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a fish and thank God for all you have to eat.

Easter Saturday
April 22, 2017

God's Word

Acts 4:19-20

Peter and John, however, said, “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”

God's Word Today

Peter and John and the other disciples started telling the people that Jesus had risen from the dead. The Jewish leaders were afraid and told the disciples not to say that Jesus had risen from the dead. Peter and John said they could not lie about something that important. They had to tell everyone they could about Jesus. Today, missionaries and some Christians tell everyone they meet about Jesus. Jesus wants everyone to know about Him. Do you know any missionaries?

To Do Today

Today, find out about the missionaries from your church. Say a prayer for them because they have a very important and sometimes dangerous job.

Second Sunday of Easter
April 23, 2017

God's Word

John 20:19-20

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,

“Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

God's Word Today

The disciples had seen Jesus die on the cross. It was very difficult to believe that He had risen from the dead. Jesus came and let them touch and see the holes where the Romans had nailed Him to the cross. He showed them the hole where the soldier had pierced his side. When the disciples saw these things, they believed that Jesus was indeed alive. Wouldn’t you like to see Jesus in person? What would you do if you saw Him? Would you ask to see the holes in his hands? It is very hard to believe in someone we never see. Jesus came to the disciples because it was very important that they believe He had been raised from the dead. They were going to write the gospels and spread the word about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, imagine seeing Jesus. Write down what you would say to Him.

Monday
April 24, 2017

God's Word

John 3:5-7

Jesus answered,

“Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’”

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling His friend, Nicodemus, that a child of God is born twice: once in the flesh and once in the spirit. You have already been born in the flesh. Your birthday, the day you were born, is what Jesus means by the day of the flesh. Are you born also of the spirit? This usually takes place when you are baptized. When you have water sprinkled on your head or if you submerge your whole body into the water, then you can invite the Holy Spirit to enter your body, mind and spirit.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your parents about being born of the spirit. If you aren’t already baptized, talk to them about when this will happen.

God's Word

Acts 4:34-35

There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.

God's Word Today

The early Christians sacrificed much to spread the gospel. They didn’t have churches like we do today to help spread the word and feed the hungry and clothe the poor. Today the church helps us do what Jesus wants us to do. But just like the early Christians, the church needs money and resources to help the needy. That is why we have the many offerings and collections in church. Most churches use this money to help the poor, to feed the hungry, to visit those in prison, so spread God’s word by sending missionaries.

To Do Today

Today, look at all the things you have and think of a way to use one thing to help the needy. You could give away clothes or toys you don’t use any more. You could give a portion of your allowance. Discuss your plan with your parents.

Wednesday

God's Word

Acts 5:19-20

But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, “Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.”

God's Word Today

The apostles were put in jail because the priests of the temple were jealous and did not want to hear about Jesus. The priests were probably afraid because so many miracles were happening in Jesus’ name and they had killed our Lord. But the word of God cannot be stilled. If God wants His word to be proclaimed, He will perform miracles. He performed one for the apostles and sent angels to open the doors of prison. God works miracles today so that all people in the world can learn about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, tell a friend or family member about Jesus. Tell them Jesus loves them.

Thursday
April 27, 2017

God's Word

Acts 5:29b

“We must obey God rather than men.”

God's Word Today

Joseph was told by God to do some very difficult things, things that were not done in his day. The apostles were told to stop talking about Jesus. All of these men decided not to listen to the men of their society, but to listen only to God. When they obeyed God and did what He asked, they were blessed in many ways. When you make decisions, think about God. Would He want you to do this? Or are you doing it because your friends tell you to? Remember that God wants you to obey Him.

To Do Today

Today, think of things God wants you to do and write them down.

Friday
April 28, 2017

God's Word

Acts 5:42

And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Messiah, Jesus.

God's Word Today

After Jesus’ death, the apostles went all over Jerusalem telling everyone about the Messiah. Many leaders were not happy with this and even whipped the apostles trying to make them stop. But they felt so strong about their orders to proclaim the gospel that they did so anyway, even if it was very dangerous. Today, there are parts of the world where Christian missionaries risk their lives to proclaim the gospel. They live in foreign countries where people don’t want to hear God’s truth. They feel so strong about their call to preach the gospel that they go anyway. Do you know any missionaries from your church?

To Do Today

Today, pray for all missionaries. Pray for their safety and strength to proclaim the gospel. If you know a missionary, write them a letter and thank them for their work.

God's Word

Acts 6:3-4 and 6

"Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, wheareas we shall devote ourselves toprayer and to the ministry of the word." They presented these men to the Apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.

God's Word Today

The number of Christians was growing and the twelve disciples couldn't manage all of their needs, so they appointed more men to help them. Today there are millions of Christians and we have many pastors who study the Word and are appointed to help other Christians. This takes a lot of work and study. This takes commitment and prayer. Ask your pastor what he had to do to become a pastor. Does the job interest you?

To Do Today

Today, Make a list of all the things your pastor does for your church. Thank your pastor.

Third Sunday of Easter
April 30, 2017

God's Word

Acts 2:14 and 22

Then Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice and proclaimed: "Let this be known to you and listen to my words Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds wonders and signs."

God's Word Today

After the first Easter, Peter told everyone about Jesus. He reminded them about how Jesus was from God because he performed signs and wonders. Today, people in church, like Peter, tell everyone about Jesus. They tell about how He performed many signs and wonders. Jesus still performs signs and wonders. Have you heard any stories lately? Have you seen any miracles?

To Do Today

Today, start a picture book or notebook or computer file and call it Signs and Wonders. Every time you see or hear of a miracle, draw or write it in the notebook or file.
