ASH WEDNESDAY

God's Word

Matthew 6:17-18

“When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”

God's Word Today

Today is the first day of lent. Lent lasts for forty days. Most people fast during lent. This means it is a time to look into yourself and decide on a bad habit you have that you want to change. This is a good time to change that bad habit. But Jesus says not to tell everyone. Just do it for God. Lent is also a time to start a good habit. If you do something for forty days, it becomes a habit. Try and think of a good thing you want to have as a habit and make that part of your fast for lent.

To Do Today

Today, decide what your fast will be. Pick a bad habit to stop doing and a good habit to start doing.

God's Word

Luke 9:22

Jesus said,

“The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.”

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling his disciples what will happen to Him. He knew that people were going to laugh at Him and make fun of Him. He knew that people were going to beat Him. He knew that they would kill Him. In spite of this, Jesus did all these things for us. He did not run away. He did not tell God He couldn’t do it. He was brave and gave his life for you. Jesus wants you to be brave also. He wants you to love Him, because He gave His life for you.

To Do Today

Today, thank Jesus for suffering and giving His life for you.

God's Word

Isaiah 58:6-7

This is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the things of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.

God's Word Today

There are many ways to fast. God lists several above. Most of the time, we can’t do what God is asking, but we can support people who do these things. These are things that happen when we support our church. These are things that happen when we live like God wants us to. Is there any way you can do one of the things God has asked? Maybe you can help fix sandwiches for the shelters. Maybe you can give some of your clothes to the poor. Maybe you can give some of your allowance to the Church. Maybe you can help your family with what God has asked.

To Do Today

Today, think of a way you can do one of the things God asks above. Ask your parents to help you.

God's Word

Luke 5:31-32

Jesus said to them in reply,

“Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do.”

God's Word Today

Have you ever said to your family that you do not want to go to church today? Do you ever think that you don’t need church because you are always a good person? Church is like a hospital. The sick go there to be healed. But the hospital needs healthy people there too. They need to be there to help the sick people. God needs you in church so you can give someone a hug and tell people you care.

To Do Today

When you go to church this weekend, smile at everyone you see and say a prayer for them.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Matthew 4:8-11

Then the devil took Jesus up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, "All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me." At this, Jesus said to him,

"Get thee away, Satan! It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve."

Then the devil left him and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

God's Word Today

Jesus went into the desert to fast for forty days. The devil came to pester Jesus. The devil wanted Jesus to sin. But Jesus fought away the devil. He used God's word to fight the devil. You can use God's word also. If you are tempted, think of what Jesus would say or do. If you have studied your Bible, you will be like Jesus and know what to say.

To Do Today

Today, read the rest of the story about Jesus in the desert. Draw a picture of Jesus telling the devil no.

God's Word

Leviticus 19:11

You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another.

God's Word Today

This word of God is very clear. He does not want you to steal. He does not want you to lie. Speaking falsely to one another is the same as not telling the truth. Why do you think God does not want you to tell lies or to steal? How do you feel if someone steals from you? How do you feel if someone lies to you? It makes you angry. That is why God does not want you to do these things.

To Do Today

Today, think about a time you lied or took something that did not belong to you. Tell God you are sorry. If you can, tell the person you lied to or stole from that you are sorry.

God's Word

Matthew 6:12-13

“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

God's Word Today

A transgression is another word for sin. Transgression means that someone does something to hurt another person. Lent is a time to forgive sins. God wants us to forgive anyone who has hurt us in any way. He wants us to forgive anyone who has sinned against us or someone we know. If we cannot forgive, we cannot expect God to forgive us when we make a mistake or when we hurt someone else. God wants to forgive everyone. That is why Jesus died for us. We just have to ask.

To Do Today

Today, think of someone who has hurt you or who has sinned against someone you know. Pray to God and ask Him to forgive them.

God's Word

Jonah 3:6a and 8b

When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne and proclaimed: “Every man shall turn from his evil way and from the violence he has in hand.”

God's Word Today

Jonah went to the king of Nineveh with a message from God. Jonah told the people that God was not happy with their evil ways and sins. Jonah warned the people. In this story, the people listened to God. The king, who was the ruler of the people, ordered the people to stop being bad. The king and the people listened to Jonah. They repented and changed their ways. This made God very happy. Sometimes our parents point out something we are doing that is not right. We can do like the people of Ninevah and listen to our parents. We can ask God to help us change our ways. We can try to turn the bad habit into a good habit, then God and our parents will be very pleased.

To Do Today

Today, think about something your parents or teachers have told you that you should not do. Make a decision today to change that bad habit. What good habit could you replace it with?

God's Word

Matthew 7:12

Jesus said,

“Do unto others whatever you would have them do unto you.”

God's Word Today

This is one of the most basic rules that Jesus teaches us. We know how we want to be treated. We know how we want other people to act toward us. Jesus is telling us to treat other people as we would like to be treated. We should treat our family like we want them to treat us. We should treat our friends like we want them to treat us. We should even treat our enemies like we would want them to treat us.

To Do Today

Today, list all the ways you want your family and friends to treat you. Do you treat them in these ways?

God's Word

Matthew 5:21-22a

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will also be liable to judgment.”

God's Word Today

We know that killing or hurting someone is evil. It is a sin against God and killing makes Him very sad. Did you know that anger is a sin also? Did you know that anger makes God very sad? When Jesus talks about being angry at a brother, He means any person who is close to you—brother, sister, friend, parents, even a teacher. Many times these people will make you angry for one reason or another. That is very normal. Jesus wants you to forgive them and not stay mad because that anger makes Him and His Father, God, very unhappy.

To Do Today

Today, think of someone who has made you angry. Can you forgive them and not be mad anymore? See how much better you feel when you do.

God's Word

Deuteronomy 26:17

Today you are making this agreement with the Lord: he is to be your God and you are to walk in his ways and observe his statutes, commandments and decrees, and to hearken to his voice.

God's Word Today

Moses is telling the people that they have made an agreement with the Lord. They have agreed that He is their God and they are to walk in His ways. What does it mean to walk in His ways? It means to do what Jesus would do. Whenever you have a situation, think about what Jesus would do. You are not only to do what He would do, but you are to follow his commandments. Listen to what He says in the Bible and just do it.

To Do Today

Today, think of a problem you had this week. What would Jesus do? Write down what Jesus would do and try to do it yourself.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Matthew 17:5b

Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.

God's Word Today

Jesus took Peter, John and James up to the mountain to pray. The disciples were covered with a cloud. At first they were very afraid, but a voice came from the cloud and spoke. This voice was God the Father. He is telling the disciples and you to listen to His chosen Son, Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, sit in a quiet place and listen to God.

God's Word

Daniel 9:4b

Ah, Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and observe your commandments!

God's Word Today

God is great. God is awesome. God is merciful. He promises to love you if you love Him and try to live by His laws. You have been doing this all during lent. You have been following His commandments to love one another.

To Do Today

Today, tell God how great He is. Tell God how awesome He is. Tell God you love Him.

Tuesday

God's Word

Isaiah 1:16

Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from before my eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good.

God's Word Today

Many people think of baptism during lent. Baptism washes our souls clean from sin. The ceremony with water symbolizes this sacred event. When we say Jesus is Lord of our life, we remember He has washed us clean in baptism. Every time we drink His blood in communion, we are given new life to our souls. After we have been baptized, Jesus helps us to stop doing bad things. He teaches us to do good things.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of what baptism means to you.

God's Word

Matthew 20:26-28

But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

God's Word Today

Some of the disciples were arguing over who was going to be the most important. Jesus explained to them that a true disciple was never first, or most important. A true disciple acts like a servant or slave to others. In other words a true disciple serves people and helps them rather than the other way around. Look around you at the people in your church. Those who do the most helping are usually not the ones who get all the attention. That is the way they want it. That is the way Jesus wants you to serve.

To Do Today

Today, think of ways you can be a servant. Write them down. Try to be a servant to others.

God's Word

Jeremiah 17:7-8

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still bears fruit.

God's Word Today

God wants us to trust Him. He is telling us that if we do, we will be strong like the tree. A tree has strong roots. We have strong roots when we read the Bible and learn all we can about God. The more we read the Bible, the stronger we will be. The more we know about God, the more we will trust Him. Just as the more roots the tree has, the stronger it will be. When drought comes or other problems develop, the tree will stay strong because it has lots of roots. When we have problems, we will be strong if we have lots of trust in God.

To Do Today

Today, think of a way that reading the Bible has made you strong. Make a picture or write about your experience.

God's Word

Psalm 105:4-5

Rely on the mighty Lord; constantly seek his face. Recall the wondrous deeds he has done, his signs and his words of judgment.

God's Word Today

In the Bible, whenever it says to “seek his face”, it means to learn all you can about God. In Biblical days men and women covered their faces when they were out in public, but when they got to know someone well, they invited the person into their home and learned what their face looked like. In other words, they learned more about that person. God wants us to invite Him into our home and learn all we can about Him. He wants us to think about all the wonderful things He has done for us.

To Do Today

Today, find or draw pictures that show God’s love and put them on a poster.

Saturday
March 18, 2017

God's Word

Micah 7:19

God will again have compassion on us, treading underfoot our guilt. God will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins.

God's Word Today

We have been reading all week about how much God loves us and how merciful He is. He has promised us time after time that He will forgive our sins. In this verse He says He will cast them into the sea. He says that because the sea is so big, that no one will ever find them. This is very comforting because we all sin at one time or another, even when we try our hardest to be good. No one is perfect and God understands that. He just wants us to try our best to follow His rules. When we make a mistake, just ask Him to forgive you and try not to do it again. That’s all He wants us to do. Guess what? He loves you so much that He will toss that mistake into the sea.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the sea and put pictures of some of your mistakes in it. Then thank God for forgiving those mistakes.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Exodus 17:3-6

In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "Why did you ever make us leave Egypt? Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our livestock?" So Moses cried out to the Lord, "What shall I do with this people? The Lord answered Moses, "Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink." This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of Israel.

God's Word Today

God had been performing so many miracles. He took the Israelites out of Egypt because they were slaves there. But still, the people didn't have faith. They thought they were going to die of thirst. They grumbled and complained instead of having faith in the Lord. God was gracious. He told Moses to strike the rock and He showed the people again that He was with them and He would take care of them. Do you ever have doubts that God is there? Do you complain and grumble. That shows you have little faith.

To Do Today

Today, think of all the things you have complained about this week and ask God to forgive you. Instead, thank Him for your blessings.

Psalms 43:4

That I may come to the altar of God, to God, my joy, my delight. Then I will praise you with the harp, Oh God, my God.

God's Word Today

When we go to the altar of God, it means we pray to Him. Most of the time we say prayers, but God also likes music. In this Psalm, the psalmist prays to God with his musical instrument, the harp.

To Do Today

Do you play an instrument? Have you ever played it for God? Today, play some music for God. You can play your own instrument or you can play your radio or CD. God loves music.

Daniel 3:41

And now we follow you with our whole heart, we fear you and we pray to you.

God's Word Today

The three men who were thrown in a fiery furnace because they would not worship a false god. They called out their trust in God. God protected them from the flames and they sang a song to Him. They promised to follow Him with their whole heart. When they said they feared God they mean they respect him so much that they fear offending Him.

To Do Today

Today, read the whole story of the Fiery Furnace in Daniel, chapter 3. Discuss what happened with your parents or teacher.

God's Word

Deuteronomy 4:6

Observe the law carefully, for this will give evidence of your wisdom and intelligence to the nations, who will hear of all these statutes and say, ‘This great nation is a truly wise and intelligent people.”

God's Word Today

This Bible verse is telling us to follow the rules of God and our country, remembering that other people are watching us. We want them to see good Christian behavior. Do you watch what other people do? You can tell something about people when you watch them. For example, when you see someone steal candy from the store, you know something about that person. When you see a child drop a toy and another person picks it up and returns it to the owner, you know something about that person.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of rules you have in your country. Draw or color a map of your country.

God's Word

Jeremiah 7:23

Listen to my voice; then I will be your God and you shall be my people. Walk in all the ways that I command you, so that you may prosper.

God's Word Today

God is telling you to listen to His voice. There are many ways to hear His voice. His voice is the voice of love. You hear God when someone tells you that they love you. You hear God in beautiful music. You hear God when the rain falls or the wind blows in the trees. You hear God when a baby giggles.

To Do Today

Today, think of all the ways you hear God. Draw a picture or write a story of your favorite way to hear God.

Hosea 14:10

Straight are the paths of the Lord, in them the just walk, but sinners stumble in them.

God's Word Today

If you try and do everything Jesus tells you, you are walking in His path. You are walking like He wants you to. That is why it says you walk a straight path. But if you do bad things, or make mistakes or stumble, you are called a sinner . Jesus wants to help you when you stumble. He will forgive you. He will love you forever.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the ways you walk straight. List all the things you did this week that Jesus would be happy about. Did they make you happy too?

Hosea 6:3b

He will come to us like the rain, like spring rain that waters the earth.

God's Word Today

God promises that He will always be there for you. In this verse, Hosea says that God comes to us like the rain. Rain falls from the clouds to water the earth. It helps the plants to grow. God’s love falls on you from heaven and helps you to grow.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a rainy day. Thank God for the rain and for His love.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

God's Word

Ephesians 5:8b-11

Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness, rather expose them.

God's Word Today

Because you believe in Jesus, you are a child of the light. When you shine and live like Jesus, you produce goodness and speak truthfully. This makes Jesus very happy. He does not want you to take part in things that are bad. He calls that darkness.

To Do Today

Today, think about what it would look like for you to be surrounded by the light of Jesus. Draw a picture of yourself in the light of Jesus.

God's Word

Isaiah 65:18

There shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; For I create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight.

God's Word Today

God is giving you another picture of heaven here. He created a place where there will be no more tears and no more sorrow. It will be a place of happiness. Everyone will be full of joy, because everyone will be loved

To Do Today

Today, pretend you were going to create heaven. What would you put there to make people happy?

John 5:15

The man went and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well.

God's Word Today

The man in the verse above had been very sick. Jesus healed the man. The man was so thankful that he went around telling everyone how wonderful Jesus was and that Jesus had healed him. Jesus still heals many people. Do you know of anyone who was healed by praying to Jesus?

To Do Today

Today, thank Jesus for His healing power. If you know of someone who is sick, ask Jesus to heal them.

John 5:24a

“Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life.”

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling the people that if they believe what He is telling them about himself and if they believe His father is God, then they will have life in heaven with Him. Jesus wants us to be in heaven with Him. He asks for us to believe He is God’s son.

To Do Today

Today, tell Jesus you believe He is the Son of God. That will make Him smile.

God's Word

John 5:36

“But I have a testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.”

God's Word Today

We can tell if someone is a Christian by the way they act. If they are loving and kind like Jesus, then they are Christians. That is how we know them. Jesus says that is how we know who He is. We can tell because of the things He did. We know He is the Son of God.

To Do Today

Today, list all the things you do today that are like Jesus.

God's Word

John 7:29

"I know God, because I am from him, and he sent me."

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling the people that He is from God. Some do not believe that He is the Messiah. But those who believe in Him know that He is Christ because they have seen His miracles.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus talking to his Father, God. Are they smiling?
