God's Word

Mark 11:15

They came to Jerusalem, and on entering the temple area he began to drive out those selling and buying there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.

God's Word Today

Jesus was angry because the money changers and the people selling doves were cheating the people who had come to the temple, God's house, to pray. Jesus does not like it when people are mean. He wants us to love one another.

To Do Today

Today, look in your Bible or on the Internet and find a picture of the temple. Where were the money changers standing? Draw a picture of the temple.

Jesus and his disciples returned once more to Jerusalem.

God's Word

Mark 14:24

Jesus said to them,

"This cup is my blood of the covenant which will be shed for many."

God's Word Today

Do you take communion in your church? Jesus wants you to think of His blood that He gave for you. He gave His blood to wash you clean. He forgives your sins and washes them away with the sacrifice of His blood.

To Do Today

Today, look in your Bible, your story books and on the Internet for pictures of Jesus at the last supper.

God's Word

Mark 12:1

Jesus began to speak to the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders in parables.

God's Word Today

A parable is a story that is told to teach you something. Jesus talked to the people many times by telling them a story. He told them stories that helped them understand who He was and who God is.

To Do Today

Today, find parables in the Bible. Make up a parable and tell it to your family.

God's Word

Mark 12:17

Jesus said to them,

"Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."

God's Word Today

Some people wanted to test Jesus so they gave Him a coin with a picture of Caesar on it. They wanted Him to say not to pay taxes because it would honor Cesaer. But Jesus knew they were trying to trick Him and He was very wise. He said to pay Cesaer the taxes. And honor God with your praise and love. This is what Jesus wants us to do today. When we buy things, we pay taxes. This helps our community. When we go to church, we honor God.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your family about paying taxes. Ask them why we pay taxes. List what tax money does for us.

God's Word

Mark 12:25

Jesus said,

"When they rise from the dead, they are like the angels in heaven."

God's Word Today

Jesus rose from the dead and His body is like an angels. He says when we rise from the dead, our body will be like an angel also. What do you think that will be like?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of what you think an angel looks like.

God's Word

Mark 12:31a

"The second greatest commandment is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

God's Word Today

Jesus wants you to know it is very important to love your neighbor. When He says to love your neighbor, he means you should love everyone. You should love your friends, people you don't know and even love your enemies.

To Do Today

Today, pray for God to help you love your neighbors.

God's Word

Mark 12:35a

Jesus was teaching in the temple area.

God's Word Today

It was important for Jesus to go to the temple. He went there to read God's word. He went there to pray. He went there to teach others about God. Do you go to church? Do you study God's word when you are in church? Do you pray when you are in church? Do you learn about Jesus when you are in church? This makes Jesus very happy.

To Do Today

Today, Make a list of all the things you learned about Jesus this week. Thank Him.

God's Word

Mark 12:41-44

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,

"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood."

God's Word Today

In these verses, Jesus is telling His disciples that it doesn't matter how much money you give to the church. What matters is how much it means to you. If it is just extra money, it doesn't mean as much. But if it is money that is very important to you, and you give it away, then you have given more than the rich people. You have given from your heart. Do you give money to the church? Do you give part of your allowance?

To Do Today

Today, start setting aside money to give to the church or to the poor. Ask your parents the best way for you to do this.

God's Word

2 Corinthians 5:1

For we know that if our earthly dwelling should be destroyed, we have a building from God, a dwelling not made with hands, eternal in heaven.

God's Word Today

Paul is telling us in this verse that we do not need to be afraid. If something happens to our body, we have a new eternal body in heaven. We will be there with Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of what you think your heavenly body will look like. What will your heavenly home look like?

God's Word

Matthew 5:9

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

God's Word Today

Jesus is teaching His disciples. He tells them that those who are peacemakers will be called children of God. Do you know some examples of peacemakers? They are people who help make peace. Police officers, judges, soldiers often work hard to make peace. Do you try and keep peace within your family? Among your friends?

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the peacemakers you know. Be sure and thank them for doing their job.

God's Word

Matthew 5:14a and 16

"You are the light of the world. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

God's Word Today

As Christians, we are like Jesus. We must act like Jesus so that others can see how He is. That makes us His light.

To Do Today

Today, list all the ways you act like Jesus.

God's Word

Matthew 5:19

"Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven."

God's Word Today

Jesus is referring to the ten commandments written in the Old Testament. He wants you to follow the ten commandments. If you obey the commandments, you will be rewarded in heaven. You will not receive that reward if you do not follow the commandments.

To Do Today

Today, ask someone to help you look up the ten commandments written in the Old Testament. They can be found in Exodus 20.

God's Word

Matthew 5:21-22a

"You have heard that is was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment."

God's Word Today

We know that it is bad to kill someone. But Jesus is telling us it is just as bad to be angry with someone. Both separate you from God.

To Do Today

Today, think about someone you have been angry with. Tell them you are sorry.

God's Word

Matthew 5:30

"And if your right hand causes you to sin, but it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell."

God's Word Today

Jesus is trying to tell you how important it is not to sin. He wants you with Him in heaven. He died so that your sins would be forgiven. We all sin. Jesus wants you to ask Him for forgiveness. That makes Him very happy.

To Do Today

Today, think of anything you did this week that might be a sin. Ask Jesus for forgiveness.

God's Word

Matthew 5:34

"But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God's throne."

God's Word Today

This week Jesus has been talking about doing good things or doing bad things. Swearing is a bad thing. He does not want you to swear. These things are bad because they separate you from God. Jesus wants you to be with Him always. The only way you can be with Jesus always is to be filled with love.

To Do Today

Today, think of all the good things you did this week. Think of all the times you were loving. Jesus is smiling.

Father's Day

God's Word

John 3:16

God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so hat everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.

God's Word Today

Today is Father's Day in the United States. It is a day to celebrate how much your fathers does for you. It is a day to thank him for all that he does for the family. We also celebrate our Father in heaven. He loved His son, yet He sacrificed His son for you. He sent the Holy Spirit to help you. Do you love both of your fathers?

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the things your father has done for you. Tell your father you love him. Tell your Father God you love him.

God's Word

Matthew 5:38-39

“You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer not resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well.”

God's Word Today

In the old days, it was okay to seek revenge. If someone attacked you, you could attack them back. If anyone stole from you, you could steal from them. If anyone hit you, you could hit them back. Jesus is telling you that it is different now. You are a child of God. You are not to seek revenge. He says if anyone strikes you, to turn your other cheek. This is a hard saying. When someone strikes at you, it is your natural reaction to strike back. But this is a worldly reaction, not a godly reaction.

To Do Today

Today, think of a time this week when someone struck at you. What did you do? If you struck back, ask God to forgive you and try next time to turn the other cheek.

God's Word

Matthew 5:44-45

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.”

God's Word Today

It is easy to hate your enemy. But Jesus wants you to be a true child of God and love your enemies. This is very difficult to do. But that is exactly what God does. He let’s the sun shine on the good people and the bad people. He gives rain to the good and also to the bad.

To Do Today

Today, make a picture of the sun shining on everything. Put pictures of your enemies on the picture and let God’s light shine on them also.

God's Word

Matthew 6:3-4

“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.”

God's Word Today

Jesus tells us over and over to give to the poor, to help the needy, and feed the hungry. What He doesn’t want you to do is to start feeling puffed up when you do these things. This leads to pride which He considers a sin. He does not want you to go around bragging to all your friends about what you have done. You don’t need someone giving you a pat on the back because you have helped someone. It is enough that God knows what you have done. God is the one who will repay you and it will be in ways more wonderful than you can imagine.

To Do Today

Today, help someone, but don’t tell anyone about it. You could help your parents, a neighbor, your teacher or your friend.

God's Word

Matthew 6:7-8

“In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

God's Word Today

Have you ever been in church and heard someone just pray on and on? Sometimes there is a place and reason for that, but Jesus says we do not have to be fancy in our prayers. We don’t need to babble on and on. In verses 9-15, He gives us the Lord’s prayer which is the style of prayer He likes. First praise God, then thank Him, then ask for forgiveness of sins and then make your request. This simple format is all that He requires.

To Do Today

Today, say the Lord’s prayer and tell God you love Him.

God's Word

Matthew 6:19-21

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be."

God's Word Today

Think of all your earthly treasures. Do you have favorite toys and clothes? Will they last forever? No, of course not. They will get broken or they could be stolen. Jesus wants you to store treasures in heaven because they last forever. Do you know what treasures are in heaven? Love, forgiveness, kindness, joy, peace, helpfulness, patience. These are treasures that will go with you to heaven.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the things you did this week that will be a treasure in heaven.

God's Word

Matthew 6:27

“Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your lifespan?”

God's Word Today

Jesus does not want you to worry or be anxious or afraid. He assures us that He will take care of us. Besides what good does it do to worry? Will it make your life longer or easier? No. In fact scientists have shown that worry causes chemicals in your body that are harmful. If you have a problem or concern, instead of worrying, try giving the problem to the Lord and have faith that He will resolve it or show you the way to resolve it

To Do Today

Today, write down all the things you worry about. How many of those things can you trust Jesus to help you with? Put a circle around those and draw an X in the circle.

God's Word

Luke 1:13-15a

But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.

God's Word Today

Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed for a son. The angel told them they would have a son and his name would be John. Do you know that John is Jesus' cousin? That is why he is so special to the Lord. Do you have cousins? Are they special to you?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of you and your cousins.

God's Word

Matthew 7:1-2

“Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.”

God's Word Today

“Stop judging, that you may not be judged. For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.”

To Do Today

Today, write two lists. On one list write down all the mistakes you made. On the second list, write down all of your acts of kindness. How do those lists make you feel?

Tuesday

God's Word

Matthew 7: 12a

"Do to others what you would have them do to you.

God's Word Today

Jesus is saying we should treat other people the way we want to be treated. We do not like people to call us names. So we should not call people names. We do not like someone to hit us. So we should not hit others. We do not like someone to take our stuff. So we should not take stuff from others.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of you doing something nice for someone. Ask your parents if you can do something nice for one of your neighbors.

Wednesday
June 27, 2018

God's Word

Matthew 7:16a

"By their fruits you will know them."

God's Word Today

This sounds funny. Jesus does not mean the kind of fruit you eat. He is referring to the fruits of the Spirit. If a person shows kindness, love, joy, peace, forgiveness, self control, gentleness, patience, and goodness then that person is one you want to know. If a person is angry, mean, a bully, a liar, cruel, etc. then he is showing evil fruits. You want to stay away from that kind of person.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the people you know who have fruits of the Spirit. Thank God for them.

God's Word

Matthew 7:21a and 23a

“Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. I will declare to them solemnly, I never knew you.”

God's Word Today

This is a very serious saying of Jesus. He says that you may know about Him, but that doesn’t mean He knows you. How do you get to know someone? You talk to them. You eat with them. You invite them to be with you. These are the things Jesus needs you to do so that He can know you. How do we talk to Jesus? We read His words in the Bible and pray to Him. We invite Him to each meal by saying a blessing. We invite Him to be with us always, at home, at play, at church and at school.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the ways Jesus will know you. What things do you do that will help Him know you well?

God's Word

Matthew 8:1-3

When Jesus came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And then a leper approached, did him homage, and said, "Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean." He stretched out his hand, touched him, and said,

"I will do it. Be made clean."

His leprosy was cleansed immediately.

God's Word Today

Leprosy was very common in Jesus time. It was a bad disease with no cure. Jesus cured the man because He is the Son of God. To do homage means to bow down and worship Jesus because the leper knew He was the Son of God.

To Do Today

Today, think of ways you can show homage or worship Jesus. Try one out each day this weekend.

God's Word

Matthew 8:16-17

When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick, to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet; "He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases."

God's Word Today

Over five hundred years before Jesus was born, prophets spoke about Jesus. Isaiah was one of those prophets. He said Jesus would heal us. And he does.

To Do Today

Today, ask Jesus to heal someone you know who is sick.
