Resurrection of the Lord

God's Word

Acts 10:39-43

“We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name.”

God's Word Today

Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, is testifying or telling you that Jesus was the chosen one, the Son of God, sent to save us. He rose from the dead in a victory over death, a victory He shares with you. This is a time to rejoice and celebrate. It is a wonderful blessing because it means that someday, if we believe in and follow the way of Jesus, we can be in heaven with God. Many people celebrate this special day of Easter. Many families get together to have parties. Others go to church together. Some families enjoy a quiet day in the park. How does your family celebrate this special day?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of your family celebrating Easter. Sing an Easter song to Jesus.

God's Word

Matthew 28:8-10

Then the women went away quickly from the tomb, fearful yet overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet, and did him homage. Then Jesus said to them,

“Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”

God's Word Today

When the angel told the women that Jesus was alive, they were so excited. They ran to tell the disciples. The disciples were so happy that they kissed Jesus feet. They loved Him so much and were so afraid that they would never see Him again. Do you remember seeing someone that you love that you hadn’t seen in a long time? Maybe it was an aunt or an uncle. Maybe it was a grandma or grandpa. Do you remember how excited you were to see them? This is how Jesus’ disciples felt.

To Do Today

Today, plan what you would do if Jesus were coming to visit you.

God's Word

John 20:11 and 16

Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been.
Jesus said to her,

“Mary!”

She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni,” which means Teacher.

God's Word Today

The other women ran to tell the disciples. But Mary Magdalene was so sad, that she stayed at the tomb crying. Then she saw the angels and then Jesus spoke to her. Can you imagine how surprised and happy she must have been? What do you think the angels who spoke to Mary looked like? What would you do if you saw an angel?

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the angels that Mary saw.

God's Word

Luke 24:29-31

“Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.

God's Word Today

The disciples met Jesus on the way from the empty tomb. They didn’t recognize him until He ate bread with them. Then they realized who He was. It was a miracle. They were surprised and overjoyed to see Jesus again. When a miracle happens, we sometimes don’t recognize that it is one. Miracles happen around us every day. It is a miracle when a flower blooms. It is a miracle when the rain waters the forest. It is a miracle when someone you love gives you a hug. Can you think of any miracles that you have seen?

To Do Today

Today, write down a list of all the miracles you see around you.

God's Word

Luke 24:36-39

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them,

“Peace be with you.”

But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. The he said to them,

“Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”

God's Word Today

The disciples had seen Jesus die on the cross. Now all of a sudden He is with them. They thought He was a spirit or a ghost. He told them to touch His hands and feet and see that he was flesh and bones. He was real. This was very difficult for the disciples to understand. It is even more difficult for us to understand. The disciples were able to touch Jesus and see that He was real. We cannot do that. We have to trust that what the disciples told us is true. We have to trust and go by faith that what is said in the Bible about Jesus is truth.

To Do Today

Today, thank God for the Bible. Say a prayer to Jesus.

God's Word

John 21:12-14

Jesus said to them,

"Come, have breakfast.”

And none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you? because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.

God's Word Today

Jesus came this time to eat with the disciples. He ate fish, which showed them He was real. A ghost or spirit cannot eat real food. The disciples now understood that Jesus was indeed alive. Today we use the fish as a symbol of Jesus. He fed His disciples fish. He feeds us truth in His word.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of a fish and thank God for all you have to eat.

God's Word

Acts 4:19-20

Peter and John, however, said, “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.”

God's Word Today

Peter and John and the other disciples started telling the people that Jesus had risen from the dead. The Jewish leaders were afraid and told the disciples not to say that Jesus had risen from the dead. Peter and John said they could not lie about something that important. They had to tell everyone they could about Jesus. Today, missionaries and some Christians tell everyone they meet about Jesus. Jesus wants everyone to know about Him. Do you know any missionaries?

To Do Today

Today, find out about the missionaries from your church. Say a prayer for them because they have a very important and sometimes dangerous job.

Second Sunday of Easter
April 8, 2018

God's Word

John 20:19-20

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,

“Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

God's Word Today

The disciples had seen Jesus die on the cross. It was very difficult to believe that He had risen from the dead. Jesus came and let them touch and see the holes where the Romans had nailed Him to the cross. He showed them the hole where the soldier had pierced his side. When the disciples saw these things, they believed that Jesus was indeed alive. Wouldn’t you like to see Jesus in person? What would you do if you saw Him? Would you ask to see the holes in his hands? It is very hard to believe in someone we never see. Jesus came to the disciples because it was very important that they believe He had been raised from the dead. They were going to write the gospels and spread the word about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, imagine seeing Jesus. Write down what you would say to Him.

God's Word

John 3:5-7

Jesus answered,

“Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’”

God's Word Today

Jesus is telling His friend, Nicodemus, that a child of God is born twice: once in the flesh and once in the spirit. You have already been born in the flesh. Your birthday, the day you were born, is what Jesus means by the day of the flesh. Are you born also of the spirit? This usually takes place when you are baptized. When you have water sprinkled on your head or if you submerge your whole body into the water, then you can invite the Holy Spirit to enter your body, mind and spirit.

To Do Today

Today, talk to your parents about being born of the spirit. If you aren’t already baptized, talk to them about when this will happen.

God's Word

Acts 4:34-35

There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.

God's Word Today

The early Christians sacrificed much to spread the gospel. They didn’t have churches like we do today to help spread the word and feed the hungry and clothe the poor. Today the church helps us do what Jesus wants us to do. But just like the early Christians, the church needs money and resources to help the needy. That is why we have the many offerings and collections in church. Most churches use this money to help the poor, to feed the hungry, to visit those in prison, so spread God’s word by sending missionaries.

To Do Today

Today, look at all the things you have and think of a way to use one thing to help the needy. You could give away clothes or toys you don’t use any more. You could give a portion of your allowance. Discuss your plan with your parents.

God's Word

Acts 5:19-20

But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, “Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.”

God's Word Today

The apostles were put in jail because the priests of the temple were jealous and did not want to hear about Jesus. The priests were probably afraid because so many miracles were happening in Jesus’ name and they had killed our Lord. But the word of God cannot be stilled. If God wants His word to be proclaimed, He will perform miracles. He performed one for the apostles and sent angels to open the doors of prison. God works miracles today so that all people in the world can learn about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, tell a friend or family member about Jesus. Tell them Jesus loves them.

God's Word

Acts 5:29b

“We must obey God rather than men.”

God's Word Today

Joseph was told by God to do some very difficult things, things that were not done in his day. The apostles were told to stop talking about Jesus. All of these men decided not to listen to the men of their society, but to listen only to God. When they obeyed God and did what He asked, they were blessed in many ways. When you make decisions, think about God. Would He want you to do this? Or are you doing it because your friends tell you to? Remember that God wants you to obey Him.

To Do Today

Today, think of things God wants you to do and write them down.

God's Word

Acts 5:42

And all day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Messiah, Jesus.

God's Word Today

After Jesus’ death, the apostles went all over Jerusalem telling everyone about the Messiah. Many leaders were not happy with this and even whipped the apostles trying to make them stop. But they felt so strong about their orders to proclaim the gospel that they did so anyway, even if it was very dangerous. Today, there are parts of the world where Christian missionaries risk their lives to proclaim the gospel. They live in foreign countries where people don’t want to hear God’s truth. They feel so strong about their call to preach the gospel that they go anyway. Do you know any missionaries from your church?

To Do Today

Today, pray for all missionaries. Pray for their safety and strength to proclaim the gospel. If you know a missionary, write them a letter and thank them for their work.

God's Word

Acts 6:3-4 and 6

"Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, wheareas we shall devote ourselves toprayer and to the ministry of the word." They presented these men to the Apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.

God's Word Today

The number of Christians was growing and the twelve disciples couldn't manage all of their needs, so they appointed more men to help them. Today there are millions of Christians and we have many pastors who study the Word and are appointed to help other Christians. This takes a lot of work and study. This takes commitment and prayer. Ask your pastor what he had to do to become a pastor. Does the job interest you?

To Do Today

Today, Make a list of all the things your pastor does for your church. Thank your pastor.

Third Sunday of Easter

God's Word

Acts 3:15 and 18

Peter said to the people: "The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. Now I know, brothers, God has brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer."

God's Word Today

Prophets told about Christ hundreds of years before it happened. Because what the prophets said came about, you must listen to what the prophets say about what will happen in the future. Many things are predicted. What God wants you to do to be prepared is to read and study His word. He also wants you to love Him and His son, Jesus. You will be prepared if you do these two things.

To Do Today

Today, ask your parents or Sunday school teacher what things will happen in the future. Draw a picture of one of these events.

God's Word

John 6:28-29

So the crowd said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them,

“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”

God's Word Today

Many people think that doing what God wants is very complicated. God’s will is very simple. All He wants is for you to believe in His Son, Jesus and for you to love Him. If you love God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit with all your heart, you can’t help but do God’s will.

To Do Today

Today, write Jesus a letter and tell Him how much you love Him.

God's Word

John 6:35

Jesus said to them,

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

God's Word Today

When Jesus says His followers will never hunger or thirst, He means they will never be hungry for spiritual food or drink. When you talk to Jesus, He always feeds your spirit. You may not see Him or hear Him, but your spirit does. Because you cannot see Jesus talking to your spirit, you eat bread at communion and drink wine. This food and drink becomes the body and blood of Christ and feeds your spirit. The bread and wine you can see and taste so it helps you to believe that Jesus really is feeding your spirit even though you cannot see or taste it.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the communion service in your church.

God's Word

Acts 8:4

Now those who had been scattered went about preaching the word.

God's Word Today

Many of Jesus’ followers were killed or attacked for preaching the word. Others ran to different towns. This sounds sad, but it is really what Jesus wanted. He wanted his word spread throughout the world. If His followers had not been scared, they would have stayed home and the gospel would not have spread all over the world. Today, missionaries and Christians all over the world, risk their lives to preach the word. Do you know anyone who has done this?

To Do Today

Today, attach a note to a balloon that says, “Jesus loves you.” Release the balloon into the sky. Say a prayer that whoever finds it will believe in Jesus

God's Word

John 6:45

“It is written in the prophets: ‘They shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me.”

God's Word Today

God teaches you every time you read the Bible. If you read the Bible, you will know about Jesus. The Bible explains how wonderful Jesus is. If you read the Bible you will want to be friends with Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, read a story in the Bible about Jesus. Draw a picture to go with the story.

Acts 9:17-18 and 20

So Ananias went and entered the house; laying his hands on Saul, he said, “Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the holy Spirit.” Immediately things like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. He got up and was baptized. He began at once to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

God's Word Today

Saul hated the early Christians because he thought they hated God. He murdered many. Jesus loved Saul because Saul thought he was doing the right thing. Jesus came to Saul and blinded him. Saul asked for forgiveness. Then He forgave Saul and gave him back his sight. What do you think would have happened if Saul hadn’t asked for forgiveness? Because of this miracle, Saul became one of Jesus most active disciples. He traveled all over the world to proclaim the gospel.

To Do Today

Today, make a list of all the people you know who proclaim the gospel. Say a prayer for each one of them.

God's Word

Acts 9:34-35

Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you. Get up and make your bed.” He got up at once. And all the inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

God's Word Today

Aeneas had been paralyzed for eight years. Peter said the words that Jesus had healed Aeneas. When all the people saw this they believed. Often the Lord performs miracles so that people will believe in Him. The whole town believed after this miracle. Have you seen anyone believe in the Lord after a miracle?

To Do Today

Today, think of a miracle you have seen or have heard about. Did it make your belief in Jesus stronger? Thank Jesus for the miracle.

God's Word

1 John 3:2

Beloved, we are God's children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

God's Word Today

When you said that you believed in Jesus Christ and that He is the Son of God, you became one of God's children. You do not know what you will look like, but God promises that you will be like Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus.

John 10:4

“When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice.”

God's Word Today

Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd. Sheep learn to recognize the voice of their shepherd and they follow him. Jesus wants you to recognize His voice and follow Him. How do you think you will recognize His voice?

To Do Today

Today, read Psalm 23.

God's Word

John 10:27-28

“My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.”

God's Word Today

A good shepherd always knows which sheep are His. He knows what each one looks like. He knows how they act. He knows who they are. Jesus is your Good Shepherd. He knows what you look like. He knows how you act. He knows who you are. He knows you because you follow Him. He promises to give the sheep He knows eternal life.

To Do Today

Today, put a picture of yourself next to a picture of Jesus. Is Jesus smiling at you?

God's Word

John 12:46

"I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness."

God's Word Today

Jesus says that He came as light. That means He came to shine truth on you. If you believe in Jesus, you will discover the truth about the world and about His love. He does not want you to be in darkness. He wants you to know about Him and His love.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of Jesus and show the light surrounding Him. Talk to your family about what the light means to you.

God's Word

Acts 13:13a and 14a

From Paphos, Paul and his companions set sail and arrived at Perga in Pamphylia. They continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia.

God's Word Today

Paul was a true disciple of Jesus. Paul loved Jesus very much. He wanted everyone to know about Jesus. Paul traveled for years to many different cities and countries telling the people about Jesus. He was a true missionary.

To Do Today

Today, look in your Bible at the map of Paul’s travels. Find the places listed in today’s verses.

John 14:2

“In my father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.”

God's Word Today

Jesus’ is telling you here that He is preparing a special place for you in Heaven. He says that if he prepares a special place, He will make sure you will be there to enjoy it. He says He will also be there with you. That is one of Jesus’ promises. He loves you very much.

To Do Today

Today, draw a picture of the house you want Jesus to prepare for you. You can look in a magazine and cut out a picture of a place you would like and paste it in your book.

God's Word

Acts: 13:47-49

For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.’” The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region.

God's Word Today

Jesus was a Jew who lived in Israel. Jesus taught many of the Israelites about God’s love. The disciples taught more Israelites about Jesus. They loved Jesus. But God wants everyone to know about Jesus. So God sent the disciples into other lands. The Jews called them Gentiles. The disciples taught the Gentiles about Jesus. Many learned to believe in the Lords. Today, missionaries still go to many countries to teach the people about Jesus.

To Do Today

Today, look at a present day map. Ask your parents or Sunday School teacher which countries still need to learn about Jesus. Pray for the people in those countries.

To Do Today

Today, tell someone in your family you love them. Tell a friend you love them.

John 14:26

“The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.”

God's Word Today

How did you do yesterday with your project of being loving, kind, patient, gentle, joyful, forgiving, and caring? Did you ask Jesus for help? He sent the Holy Spirit to help you. The Holy Spirit will always be there to help you and to teach you. He lives inside of you.

To Do Today

Today, tell the Holy Spirit that you love Him. Thank Him for His help.
